Colour with roots in the Renaissance

Throughout history, darker and warmer tones have carried a sense of strength and intensity – from the deep pigments of Renaissance oil paintings to the earthy hues of modern architecture. These colours capture light in a way that adds depth to surfaces and highlights materials rather than blending in.

In interior spaces, they are used to create contrast and presence. They ground the room, strengthen shapes, and elevate details in metal, stone, and wood. In contemporary settings, they bring an expression of confidence – a way to let colour become part of the room’s identity rather than its backdrop.

Decorating with bold contrasts

When colour is given space, it’s all about balance – letting the intense meet the restrained. Deep, warm hues can create drama and presence, but they become most intriguing when contrasted with something soft, cool, or tactile.

In interior design, strong tones work best when they play against other elements: a lighter wall section, a natural stone, a warm metal. You can choose to keep the other colours more subdued – and let a single front, a tall cabinet, or an entire wall carry the expression.

It’s not about toning the colour down, but about giving it room. With the right balance, the result feels confident, considered – and impossible to ignore.
