Get inspired by Brutalism!

Brutalism is a style of architecture recognized by its raw concrete aesthetic. It reached its peak in the 1960s but continues to influence architects and designers today. Here you can read more about Brutalism and how it inspired our kitchen design Bruta!

What is Brutalism?

Brutalism emerged in the 1950s as a reaction to previous architectural styles where functionality was often hidden behind richly ornamented facades. Instead, it sought to emphasize functionality through honest construction in raw materials such as concrete and brick. But while the buildings themselves were simple and functional, it was common to commission sculptors to create decorative concrete reliefs on the facades. The reliefs gave the buildings a unique identity and contributed to their cultural significance as iconic examples of Brutalist architecture.

The Brutalist style was distinguished by its large, raw concrete surfaces and deep, dramatic shadows. Some considered it groundbreaking and innovative, while others rejected it as dystopian and unattractive. Nevertheless, the raw honesty of Brutalism has influenced many architects and designers over the years – and continues to do so today.

Kitchen inspired by Brutalism

Our kitchen design Bruta is a perfect example of how Brutalism continues to inspire contemporary design. The kitchen exudes simplicity and minimalism, while sculptural elements add a unique touch to the kitchen's functionality. One of the most striking elements of the Bruta kitchen is the base cabinet handles that form beautiful, wave-like patterns – a clear nod to Brutalism and the concrete reliefs that characterize the style. And the collection's colour palette is inspired by the raw materials of Brutalism, with subtle tones such as concrete, brick, glass and rust.
