Meet Amna Mesic, architect and content creator behind the inspiring Instagram account 'sansnovazuhause'. Step into her Hamburg apartment and witness how she artfully transformed her old Ikea Faktum frames into a mid-century wooden kitchen with a contemporary edge.

It was clear to us that keeping the existing units and giving them a fresh new 'facade' was the way to go for a smart and sustainable solution.

We initially planned to install a completely new kitchen. However, as an architect, I always consider what can be reused and integrated into a design. So when we realised we had an old Ikea Faktum kitchen and that Superfront offered compatible fronts, we had a change of heart. It was clear to us that keeping the existing units and giving them a fresh new 'facade' was the way to go for a smart and sustainable solution. To make the most of the space, we extended the kitchen by adding new Ikea Metod base units on the opposite side.

How would you describe your interior style?
The base is a combination of mid-century furniture and design classics, infused with a big portion of eclectic, colourful elements. I'm a huge fan of mixing wood with pastel colours. And I love combining old and new – it is a red thread that runs through the entire apartment.
Why did you choose this design combination?
For inspiration, I looked at old mid-century kitchens and fell in love with the combination of a white worktop with wooden fronts. As we were lucky enough to have a white worktop in the existing kitchen, we knew that was our combination! We chose the plain Biscotti Wood fronts as the grain stands in beautiful contrast to the plain white worktop.
Now that everything has its place and the work surfaces are free of clutter, cooking is so much more fun!
Your best advice for someone looking to revamp their Faktum kitchen
Check your existing cabinets and see if they are still usable. If so, you have the perfect basis for making your kitchen shine in new splendour. Don't be afraid to fit the fronts. It was super easy – and watching how quickly the kitchen got a new look was a great feeling! Consider adding new Metod elements, where possible, to optimise the functionality of the kitchen.
What features do you prioritise in a kitchen?
For me, the kitchen has to combine functionality and aesthetics. I realised in our old apartment how much I missed a well-planned and functional kitchen. Now that everything has its place and the work surfaces are free of clutter, cooking is so much more fun!
If you have guests over, what's your go-to dish to cook?
At the moment I'm obsessed with cauliflower. So my go-to dish would probably be a whole roasted cauliflower with a parsley tahini and some pomegranate seeds.
